Hello everyone. It has been a long time since I last wrote an article in our Newsletter. I sincerely apologize for that. I guess life has a way of over-whelming us at times. I want to address an issue that is very close to home in today’s time. It is an issue that will have consequences that will plague our country from now on. It is the issue of black and white, right and wrong. I am currently teaching a discipleship training class in my church on why we as Christians believe in certain things. One of those subjects is moral absolutes. As I have studied I have found that we live in a country that doesn’t believe that there is right and wrong. Many college students were asked what they believed in regard to there being moral absolutes. The vast majority said that they didn’t believe in absolutes. They said that with people having so many different opinions and views there could not possibly be a definite right or wrong out there. So, we are left with a relativistic society that determines for itself what is right and wrong. Anyone that does believe in absolute right and absolute wrong is considered shallow and narrow minded. Is there any wonder why we battle issues such as increasing violent crime, abortion, homosexuality, suicide, and an increasing number of single women giving birth? If there are no absolutes, if everything is relative, if everyone can decide for themselves what is right and wrong, then we are on a one-way street to social and political disaster. If we are not very careful there will be no chance of turning back. Civilization is defined as an, “advanced stage or system of social development or organization”. Can you imaging a country that has no definite right and wrong? A society where everyone decides for themselves what is moral. What if that extended to traffic laws, weights and measures, and laws governing conduct? What if not only you, but everyone else could decide whether or not to observe traffic lights, stop signs, and speed limits? What a pound really was? How much a dollar was worth? What if you could decide if stealing and murder were actually wrong? Does this sound like a society that has reached an advanced stage of social organization? The obvious answer is no. As a matter of fact, this has nothing to do with civilization, but has everything to do with chaos. And that is exactly where we are today. Maybe we are not to the extent of complete lawlessness. But we are suffering the consequences of people living their lives based on their opinions and feelings, and those opinions are usually determined by what a person wants. And today, people are set on getting what they want no matter what the cost, and no matter who gets hurt in the process. So why are morals so
important? Don’t we have laws to govern people, and prevent chaos from
happening? Yes, we do have those laws in place. But laws are reactionary
devices. They come into effect only after a person has broken them. If the
lawbreaker is caught, he will be tried in a court of law and punished.
However, at that point it is too late to prevent the crime. You see, laws
are only effective when people obey them. For example, what do you think
would happen if everyone in the state of This is where we must be
very careful. We as Christians must stand up and proclaim the standard for
morality in the Sadly though, we have turned away from that standard. In its place we have chosen a subjective truth. A truth that we determine and is subject to our own desires and perceived needs; a truth that changes when we want it to- whenever it is convenient. A society cannot survive in this state. There must be a standard of right and wrong that we base our lives on. Never has there been a society that has survived without a strong moral code, and that moral code has always been informed by religious truth. If we are to have peace, real peace in our country we must get back to the basics of morality- the absolute truth of the Word of God. I hope that I've given you something to think about. Until next time.... Comments for Scott? Post them on our discussion board.
